The Slap

Recently there has been an Australian drama on the TV based on a book of the same name, called The Slap. This is apparently about an adult who slaps someone elses child at a BarBQ and the repercussions. Well, Jamie last week slapped a girl at Nursery. I am not sure how serious it was as we did not have to complete a form or anything. It seems that at lunch time Jamie was being a bit mardy; not his usual self. He had not eaten his pasta and so it was taken away. At which point Jamie screamed that he wanted it back. And it was about this time that he slapped one of the pre-school girls who was sat next to him!

I have looked on the Internet and it seems that this is not seen as too serious at Jamie's age. According to Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Dr. Seth Scholer, some level of aggressive behavior is normal for toddlers because they haven't learned socially acceptable methods of expressing their emotions. Apparently, by responding appropriately to your toddler's slaps and hits, you can reduce his aggressive behavior before it develops into a more serious problem.
